High-rate Attack

These attacks are essentially forceful and often involve flooding the target with an overwhelming flux of packets, whether over saturating its connection bandwidth or depleting the target's system resources. Bandwidth starvation typically assumes the attacker has access to more machines or higher bandwidth than the victim or that it utilizes an Amplification Attack. Some high rate attacks send malformed or out of sequence packet types or connection requests to saturate finite resources such as connection state tables on firewalls. These attacks can be directed toward the network and application layers. Today, botnet armies can be deployed in minutes at very little expense to carry out these attacks.
